Rachel and á´™achael

Hello, first off, thank you for taking an interest in our page! Our names are Rachel and Rachael and we are two high school students from Toronto, Ontario. We ourselves are two multiracial teenage girls, dealing with the everyday stresses of being different from "the norm". I guess we can't complain because those stresses are exactly what led us to create this page in support of all other teens similar to us dealing with these issues across Canada.

Rachel: Hola, no I'm not Spanish or Italian or Greek or Middle Eastern or Korean, although I do LOVE all those types of food! My mom is from Sri Lanka (Tamil) and my father is English/Scottish. I have 3 younger siblings who range on the Brown-White scale. Growing up as a biracial person opened many cultural doors for me, but its also had its challenges. I have faced many surprised looks and stares when people find out about my ethinicity, and some negative comments as well. But I'm taking all that negative energy and harnessing it to create positive change and awareness to help other multiracial youth. Toronto is great, but we still have some work to do :) In general, I have a comical personality, I enjoy hanging with the apes at the zoo, and I might want to pursue a career in psychiatry/ psychology :3

Rachael: Not only is the spelling of my name quite unusual, my background is unique too. At first glance, you might guess some sort of... Brown? Maybe European? Middle Eastern? Some people go as far as Austrian. Without actually knowing what Austrian looks like. My Bioglogical Father is from Trinidad, but his family originates in India and Britain. My Biological Mother was born in India but was raised in Canada from the age of 5, so she lost a lot of her Indian culture. Her family orginates in India and somewhere, unknown to me, in Europe. Together, my biological parents made five very multiracial children. Being multiracial doesn't bother me. What bothers me, is the ignorance of people who don't recognize what it means to be multiracial. I refuse to be classified as "Brown", "White", or "Black". I am a human of many races. Even harder, is holding on to my identity as I am bounced around from different foster homes and now, looking for homes of my own. This website isn't only to help everyone else, it's also to help me.
